What is patina?

Patina refers to a special effect created by the targeted oxidation of metal. In contrast to uncontrolled rusting, in which metal becomes unusable due to corrosion, in the production of stainless steel, oxidation is deliberately initiated and the rusted surface is then protected from further corrosion in order to preserve the material. This process allows the creation of attractive decorative elements.

To create patina, a metal work is usedexposed to chemical reactions in a targeted manner. After the desired rust formation has been achieved, the workpieces are sealed with special oils to close the rust pores and largely prevent further contact between metal and oxygen. This preserves the patina effect while protecting the carrier material.
